# A Tool That Can Free Agency, or Capture It

A new tool does not decide what it is for. People do, and they can get the decision wrong.

The same machine that drafts the letter and carries the task can also settle a life more tightly than before. It can sort people into ranks, predict them into the role they already occupy, and make an arrangement feel like a fact of nature because a system produced it. That is capture. Freedom is the other use: a tool that takes the repetitive work off people’s hands so they have more room to judge, to choose, and to remake how they live and work together.

Both of the books on this page end on that fork. [The Buddha’s Case for Human Agency](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HQ18K6VB?ref=krishnasridhar.com) asks what change of mind the moment calls for, in a world under strain and in possession of a tool that could go either way. [The Second Turning](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HPZSJCMV?ref=krishnasridhar.com) asks what a long Asian history of dharma and enterprise offers as another new economy forms. Neither is a manual for software. Both treat the tool as a test of agency.

The test is collective. One person can guard a little freedom in a day. Developing human agency, at the scale this change requires, is something people do together.
