# Every Time the Economy Changed

Every time the economy changed, the Buddha’s ideas found new carriers.

Twenty-five centuries ago, in the towns of the Ganges plain, a new economy of iron, rice, and trade was pulling people out of an old order ranked by birth. Smiths, weavers, caravan leaders, merchants, and workers found in one teacher’s ideas a way to make sense of a rising world: that every social order is made by people and can be remade, that no one is born high or low, and that people can choose to act together.

[The Second Turning](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HPZSJCMV?ref=krishnasridhar.com) follows those ideas from the Ganges valley to China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Sri Lanka, and Southeast Asia. In each land the economy changes, the old social order resists, rulers take sides, and ideas rise to answer the strain. The teaching was captured by kings and landlords, closed by its own institutions, and revived in modern times by the people the new economies lifted, from Pune and Nagpur to Colombo, Osaka, and Taipei.

Another new economy is taking shape now, across Asia, and this time the new tool can do a great deal of the work people have long done. The history is not a decoration for that fact. It is a record of what people did, the last times the ground moved, when they refused to leave the new economy to the old ranks.
